ENGLISH JOY

It would be a very fruitful week for Team England at the annual Home Internationals, with both the men’s and masters taking gold in their respective categories.

The English, who were playing under the umbrella of their national governing body the EASB (English Association of Snooker and Billiards), had very strong representation in the men’s section consisting of Nick Jennings, Jake Nicholson, Ryan Causton and Shaun Wilkes.

They began their campaign with a narrow 7-5 win over a Darren Morgan inspired Wales, before a more routine 10-2 victory against Scotland A.

On day three they dropped their first points after a 6-6 draw with Northern Ireland, but made amends later on in beating Scotland B 9-3.

Going into the last day England knew they probably required to win both matches in order to achieve top spot.  They predictably dispatched the minnows of the Isle of Man 12-0 to set up a winner takes all clash with the Republic of Ireland, who had an identical record of won 4, drawn 1.

But England stood up to the task; coming home in a 9-3 success.

Jennings also topped the individual stats for the week with an amazing record of 17-1, two frames in front of second placed Irishman Rodney Goggins.

The EASB Masters team went even better.

Jamie Bodle, Wayne Brown, David Brown and Graham Beardmore managed the perfect record of winning all five round robin matches. They beat Scotland B 9-3, Wales B 7-5, Wales A 7-5, Republic of Ireland 7-5 and Scotland A 10-2.

Bodle was also the overall MVP after taking 13 points out of 15. Allen Matic of the ROI was second, while Wales A player Gavin Lewis finished third.
