Professional Snooker - 2017 Championship League Snooker (Group 2)
4th & 5th January / Ricoh Arena, Coventry, England
McGILL MAKES THE MOST OF HIS QUALIFICATION
Anthony McGill is the second player through to the big money Winners Group in 2017 Championship League Snooker.
It was almost roles reversed for the reigning Indian Open champion, who came top in Group 1 before going down in the Semi-Finals.
The Scot qualified for the Group 2 Knock-Outs after only finishing fourth in the Round Robin with 3 victories out of 6.
However, he defeated table topper Neil Robertson 3-1 in the Last 4 with a trio of half centuries and then went even better in silencing Ryan Day - the player who beat him in Group 1 - when constructing brutal runs of 107, 84 and 108 in a comprehensive 3-0 final win.
For Welshman Day, who scored just 23 total points in that final, it was his second consecutive Group final defeat. He had previously ousted second placed Mark Davis 3-2 in the Semis.
As the bottom two players of the group, both Matthew Selt and Michael White were eliminated from this year's event. Because of beating Selt in his last fixture, Mark Williams came fifth and avoided relegation himself.
McGill joins Group 1 winner David Gilbert in the tournament concluding Winners Group at the start of March.
Group 3 is set to be strong with the introduction of current Top 16 stars Joe Perry, Barry Hawkins and Ali Carter; all of whom will be looking to get vital matchplay practice ahead of the Masters at the end of next week. Along with returning pair Mark Williams and Robertson, 5 of the 7 are from the World's elite.
