Ladies Snooker - 2017 Connie Gough Memorial Trophy
18th February 2017 / Dunstable Snooker Club, England
SUPER 6 FOR CATALANO!
Maria Catalano won her sixth career Connie Gough Memorial Trophy title this weekend after a 4-2 victory over Rebecca Granger in the final.
This annual, one day, knockout event was the latest leg of this season's World Ladies Billiards and Snooker circuit.
Catalano is always a consistent performer in competitions, although this was her first silverware of the campaign. She started her charge with a narrow 3-2 win over Shannon Metcalf in the Last 16 before a 3-0 success against Aimee Benn in the Quarter-Finals. Laura Evans was then beaten 3-1 in the Semis.
There was a huge upset in the other Last 4 tie when the improving Granger dethroned defending champion Reanne Evans 3-2. Reigning World Champion Evans has won this title on seven occasions.
After a long day of action, Catalano started the final strongly and went into a 3-0 lead. Granger got on the board when taking Frame 4 on the black; she then harboured hopes of the comeback when also chalking up the fifth. However, Catalano got the task done in the next.
Evans made the highest break of the day with an effort of 79.
The next tournament to be staged is the big one - the 2017 WLBS Eden Resources World Women's Snooker Championship from Toa Payoh, Singapore between the 13th-19th March where there is a prize fund of £15,000.
