Latvian youngster Rodion Judin claimed the 2018 Ukrainian Independence Day Cup earlier this week in Kiev.

Organised by Sergey Boiko and the National Snooker Federation of Ukraine, the second annual edition of this event featured 72 players from Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Belarus, Latvia and the host nation, who competed in five days of action at the Club Leader venue.

The tournament was split into two halves - a qualification section and the Last 16 Knock-Outs. In the KOs, 21-year-old Judin who is the reigning and three-times Latvian National Champion, defeated Ivan Kyupov (Bulgaria) 3-2 and then promising 12-year-old Iulian Boiko (Ukraine) 4-3 to reach the Semi-Finals.

In the Last 4 Judin eliminated 2017 European Amateur Championship Runner-Up Andres Petrov (Estonia) 4-2 before claiming the title with a 5-3 victory against Georgi Velichkov in the final.

The competition was run in a very professional way, whilst the versatile nature of the players and different nationalities involved proves how Snooker in Eastern Europe is gathering interest and more participants.
